This past month, Google announced the launch of yet another product, Google Wallet, an Android app that will allow users to use their phone as a payment card. This is done by simply tapping your phone on any participating retailer’s MasterCard PayPass electronic reader, so that it sends payment to the merchant. This electronic wallet will eventually allow you to store all of your existing debit or credit cards on your phone. However, when Google initially launches their electronic wallet, users will only be able to use their Citi MasterCards or Google’s Prepaid Card. In addition to this, the electronic wallet will also be able to store your loyalty cards from any participating SingleTap retailers. This will greatly diminish the hassle of carrying numerous loyalty cards in your wallet, but also help to expand the number of consumers who use loyalty cards. In sync with the Google Wallet, Google has also launched Google Offers, which allows users to find offers on other Google products (maps, search, shopper) or directly from the daily offer website on google.com/offers. Before you get too excited, you may want to check out the list of participating retailers on Google Wallet’s website. Upon typing in my own address, a list of local retailers popped up, but much to my dismay, only 7 Eleven, CVS, and other random retailers I wouldn’t even use once a month popped up near my location.

The security placed on this electronic wallet includes a PIN that must be entered before making a purchase and a secure payment chip containing encrypted payment information. The chip will be in your phone, separate from the Android memory card. While the security of this electronic wallet may be advanced, there are still some cons to its use: If your phone is lost or stolen, you still have to cancel your cards the old traditional fashioned way. Also, if you’re a college student like me, or a constant public transportation user, you’ll still need to carry around your ID or transportation card.
